getting out of comfort zone

In my own journey, there were many times when sticking to what felt safe seemed like the best choice.

But you know what?

The most amazing moments, the ones that really moved me forward, happened when I decided to take a leap. It’s all about getting out of comfort zone and taking risks.

I remember a catch-up with a good friend from university. She said, “Hey Ratna, I’m so amazed by what you have accomplished so far, from a quiet shy girl during our uni days to where you are today, it’s really inspiring to witness your growth and transformation, I’m so proud of you!”

With curiosity, she asked the question, “How did you do it?”

Stepping outside my comfort zone, to embrace the unknown has allowed me to push my boundaries and create my own transformation.

💥 I spoke on TEDx
💥 I joined a pageant
💥 I started a podcast
💥 I reached out to people
💥 I started my own business

Every single one of these experiences was nerve-wracking. There were moments when I wanted to choose the easy way out, but I remember my bigger why — the positive impact I aspire to create. That purpose became my driving force to conquer the odds.

Why do we Stay in our Comfort Zones?

Sticking to what feels comfortable is a habit many of us have. It’s because we’re often scared or unsure about new things. Here are some reasons why we like to stay in our comfort zones:

😨 Fear of the unknown

One reason why people tend to stay in their comfort zones is the fear of the unknown. Going beyond what feels familiar can be scary and make us anxious. We worry about failing or being rejected, which stops us from trying new things.

😔 Lack of confidence

Another factor that keeps us within our comfort zones is a lack of confidence. Familiar routines give us a sense of security, while new challenges can make us doubt ourselves. Without confidence in our abilities, we’re less likely to step outside our comfort zones.

🎭 Imposter syndrome

That nagging voice whispering “you’re not good enough” can be a real roadblock. It might hold us back from pursuing new opportunities or showcasing our talents for fear of being exposed as a fraud. Imposter syndrome is a real thing, and it can be a powerful deterrent to stepping outside our comfort zones.

🌱 Limited growth opportunities

Sticking to our comfort zones hinders our potential for personal growth. When we confine ourselves to familiar surroundings, we miss out on chances to learn, develop, and explore ourselves. Growth often happens when we push ourselves beyond what feels safe and dare to try new things.

❌ Resistance to change

Humans crave routine, finding comfort in the familiar. Stepping beyond our comfort zones means facing change, which can be tough. This resistance often keeps us rooted in what we know, even when we want to grow.

Signs you’re Stuck in your Comfort Zone

How do you know if you’re stuck on autopilot in your comfort zone?

Here are a few telltale signs:

  1. The groundhog day feeling
Every day feels the same. Your to-do list looks like yesterday’s, and there’s a sense of monotony creeping in. This lack of challenge can be a sign you’re not pushing yourself to grow.

  2. The complaining cycle
You’re always complaining about your job, routine, or life overall. Venting can be okay occasionally, but if you’re always negative, it might mean you’re not growing or trying new things enough.

  3. The innovation block
You’re running out of new ideas quickly. You’re stuck in a boring routine and can’t seem to be creative anymore.

  4. The “shoulda, woulda, coulda” blues
You find yourself dwelling on missed opportunities and past regrets. This can be a sign of a yearning for something more, something you haven’t dared to pursue because it lay outside your comfort zone.

  5. The Safety Net Trap
You prioritize security over growth. The idea of taking risks or trying something new feels terrifying, even if it could lead to something amazing.

Remember, a little comfort is a good thing! But when it stops your growth and keeps you from reaching your full potential, it’s time to break free.

Stepping out of your Comfort Zone in Daily Life

Stepping out of your comfort zone isn’t just about taking big risks or making major life changes. It’s also about making small, everyday choices that push you beyond what feels safe and familiar. Here are some simple ways to step out of your comfort zone in daily life:

🆕 Try something new

Whether it’s a new hobby, a different cuisine, or a unique experience, stepping out of your comfort zone can be as simple as trying something you’ve never done before.

🗨️ Strike up a conversation

Initiate a conversation with someone you don’t know well, whether it’s a coworker, neighbor, or stranger you encounter during your day. Engaging with new people can help broaden your perspective and expand your social circle.

🎯 Challenge yourself

Set a goal that pushes you outside of your comfort zone, whether it’s running a little farther than usual, learning a new skill, or taking on a new responsibility at work.

👋 Embrace failure

Don’t be afraid to fail or make mistakes. Instead, see them as opportunities for growth and learning. Embracing failure can help you build resilience and develop a growth mindset.

📅 Change your routine

Break out of your daily routine by doing something different. Take a different route to work, try a new exercise class, or switch up your morning routine. Small changes can help shake up your perspective and open you up to new experiences.

💪 Face your fears

Identify something that scares you and take steps to confront it. Whether it’s public speaking, heights, or trying something you’ve always avoided, facing your fears head-on can help you build confidence and resilience.

🧘 Practice mindfulness

Be present in the moment and pay attention to your thoughts and feelings. Mindfulness can help you become more aware of when you’re operating within your comfort zone and empower you to make conscious choices to step outside of it.

Start small, be patient with yourself, and celebrate your wins along the way.

Recognizing your Comfort Zone

We’ve talked about the comfort zone and how it can sometimes hold us back from reaching our full potential. But how can we recognize the areas where we’re playing it safe and unknowingly holding ourselves back?

Here are some reflective exercises to help you uncover your hidden self-beliefs:

✨ Visualization exercise

Close your eyes and visualize your ideal life – the dreams, goals, and experiences you’ve always wanted to pursue but haven’t. Explore the reasons behind why you haven’t taken action on these desires.

💭 The “what if…?” challenge

Take a moment to think about things you’ve always wanted to do or learn. Write them down, big or small. Next to each, write down any negative thoughts that come to mind, like “What if I fail?” These thoughts might show self-limiting beliefs.

Challenge them! Instead of “What if I fail?”, ask yourself, “What if I succeed?”

🎯 Setting fear goals

Make a list of things that scare you or make you uncomfortable. It could be anything like speaking in public or going on a trip alone or learning something new.

Each week, pick one fear and work on it little by little. Keep track of how you’re doing and celebrate each step forward.

🛑 The “Comparison trap” detox

Social media can be good and bad. It connects us, but it can also make us feel bad about ourselves. Take a break from social media and think about your own achievements. Write down what makes you special and what you’re proud of.

The goal of these reflective exercises is not to criticize or judge yourself but rather to gain insight and awareness into areas where you can challenge yourself to grow and expand beyond your comfort zone.

Conclusion

Many people believe that transformation is the before and after snapshot but it’s the messy middle.

💫 It’s the day when you doubt yourself but still do it anyway
💫 It’s the day when you battle imposter syndrome but courageously winging it
💫 It’s the day when you feel insecure, yet you show up, choose yourself again and again

Getting out of comfort zone takes courage, but learning to make peace with our shortcomings, silencing our inner critics, and stepping into our power – trusting in our own incredible capacity to evolve is they key to achieve greatness.

Together, we can rewrite our narratives and unleash our true potential! 💪✨
