embrace imperfections

Are you tired of the pressure to create a perfect personal brand?

It’s time to break free from the shackles of perfectionism.

You know, we’ve been told that to succeed, we need to be perfect. We’re supposed to have everything figured out, look flawless, and never show any flaws. But guess what? That’s not true at all. 🙅‍♀️ Our quirks, flaws, and stories are what make us special and interesting.

So, I’m here to assure you – Embrace your imperfections and let them show in your personal brand. Because when you do, amazing things can happen.

Why Perfectionism Holds you Back?

🎨 Creativity takes a backseat

When it comes to personal branding, perfectionism is a big no-no. It’s like creativity’s worst enemy. When we’re too hung up on being perfect, we end up playing it safe and sticking to the same old routine. The coolest personal brands are the ones that embrace the messy, the unexpected, and the quirky.

Perfectionism tricks us into thinking that if things aren’t flawless, they’re not worth sharing. It makes us believe we have to be flawless to succeed. But that’s just not true.

Personal branding is all about being real, relatable, and true to yourself. So, when we stop stressing about being perfect, it’s like opening the door to a whole new world of creativity. We can try out new things, experiment with different ways of showing who we are, and really put our own spin on stuff. And let me tell you, that’s where the real magic happens in personal branding.

🤝 Missed opportunities for connection

How does perfectionism mess with our ability to connect with others? It’s not just about killing our creativity; it actually stops us from making real connections.

  • People like realness

Think about who you’d rather hang out with – someone who acts like they have it all figured out or someone who’s honest about their good days and bad days? We connect with people who share the messy parts of life, not those who pretend everything’s perfect.

  • Being real builds trust

When you let down your guard and show your flaws, it helps others feel closer to you and trust you. It shows courage and makes you easier to relate to. It’s like saying, “Hey, I’m human too!” And that’s what brings people together – knowing they’re not alone in their struggles.

  • Fear of being unliked? Forget it!

Perfectionism can make us afraid to show anything less than perfect. But you know what? Being open about your imperfections can lead to real connections. You can’t make true friends if you’re always pretending to be something you’re not.

🌱 Stagnation and missed growth

The pursuit of perfection can hold you back from growing your personal brand. When you’re too worried about being flawless, you’re scared to take risks or try new things.

This leads to staying stuck – your brand stays the same, while the world changes around you. You miss out on chances to reach more people, try new platforms, or test fresh ideas. And without growth and change, your brand becomes boring and out of touch.

But when you embrace your imperfections, you open up to so much more. You’re ready to be vulnerable, try new stuff, and let your brand evolve with you. This leads to big growth – for you and your brand.

Let me share with you one of the imperfection stories I shared on LinkedIn, I shared my experience of migrating to Singapore, I could barely speak English and how I received hurtful comments. I was hesitating whether to share this story but I did.

When I learn to embrace my imperfections, recognise my inner critics, acknowledge its presence and brave enough to step into my space to chart the future on my own terms, better things are unfolding:

♦️ Transforming my fear into fuel that drives me to make a better life for myself – spoke on TEDx, featured by Channel News Asia & recognised as LinkedIn Top Voice

♦️ Starting my training and consulting in 🇸🇬 elevating employees well-being and empowering diversity, equity and inclusions at the workplace (so no one had to experience what I went through)

♦️ Empowering our young future women leaders to have the courage to chart their own career and dream a little bigger

There is so much power in leaning into discomfort, owning our space, and trusting our inner wisdom.

So let’s drop the idea of being perfect and embrace our flaws. Because when we do, we tap into the real strength of authenticity in personal branding – inspiring, empowering, and connecting with others in ways that matter.

Excited to see what awesome things you’ll do once you let go of perfectionism and show your true brand power!
