✨ Who am I to be named one of the 10 LinkedIn Top Voices to follow in Singapore?
It feels surreal for real!
18 years ago, I arrived in Singapore, with nothing but hope for a better future.
I could barely speak English. Public speaking trauma makes me feel inadequate. Let alone pursuing my dream to be a teacher/educator.
But that fire in me refused to give up!
Along the way, I discovered something powerful: sharing my story and experiences wasn’t just about me—it was about helping others.
That’s when I realized the true value of thought leadership. 💪
Defining Thought Leadership
💡 What is thought leadership?
Thought leadership is all about sharing your knowledge and insights to influence others. It helps you build trust and credibility by showing your expertise in a certain field.
🤔 How is it different from traditional leadership?
While traditional leaders focus on managing people and making decisions, thought leaders inspire with ideas. They push for innovation and encourage others to think in new ways, building a community around shared values.
💖 Importance of authenticity
Being real is key! Authentic thought leaders share genuine ideas and personal experiences that connect with their audience, creating trust and lasting relationships.
📚 Expertise matters
To be a strong thought leader, you need to know your stuff! Stay updated on trends in your field and share that knowledge in a way that’s clear and valuable to your audience.
Common Challenges in Thought Leadership
🔍 Misconceptions
Many think thought leadership is just about being an expert. But it’s more than that! It’s about sharing unique insights that challenge the norm and inspire others. It’s not enough to just know your field—you have to engage and motivate people, too.
👁️ Visibility issues
Consistent engagement is key, but creating fresh content can be tough and lead to burnout. Planning a sustainable content schedule and repurposing existing content can keep your voice present without overwhelming yourself.
🌍 Content saturation
With so much content out there, standing out requires sharing personal experiences and unique insights that connect with your audience. By embracing storytelling, you can forge authentic connections and rise above the noise.
Overcoming Imposter Syndrome
For the longest time, I grappled with imposter syndrome.
I used to believe that my achievements were a result of :
luck
timing
external factors
Rather than my own abilities.
But as I worked through these feelings, I discovered golden nuggets that helped me overcome these barriers, especially in my journey to becoming a thought leader:
🌻 Always be learning!
Embrace a growth mindset. The industry is ever-evolving, and staying curious and open to new knowledge keeps us ahead.
🌻 Show up every day and believe in yourself. You do you, You be You!
Consistency is key. Showing up every day with confidence in our unique abilities not only builds our self-worth but also establishes our presence as thought leaders.
🌻 Break the glass ceiling – the only glass ceiling is in our mind.
Often, the limitations we face are self-imposed. By challenging our perceptions and daring to aim higher, we can shatter those barriers and achieve greatness.
Navigating Criticism and Resistance
📌 Inevitability of criticism
Criticism is part of the thought leadership journey and can shake your confidence, especially with imposter syndrome. Remember, it often reflects more about the critic than about you.
📌 Gaining credibility
Building credibility can be tough for newcomers, especially on social media. Focus on creating quality content and sharing unique insights consistently to earn respect.
The Rewards of Conquering Thought Leadership Challenges
1️⃣ Increased visibility
Overcoming challenges leads to greater visibility in your field. As you share your insights and engage authentically, you stand out and attract attention from a broader audience.
2️⃣ Valuable connections
Thought leadership opens doors to valuable connections. Networking on platforms like LinkedIn allows you to meet peers, mentors, and collaborators, leading to new opportunities.
3️⃣ Personal growth
Facing and overcoming these challenges fosters personal growth. You develop resilience, confidence, and new skills that enhance your leadership journey and empower you to inspire others.
Conclusion
Thought leadership isn’t just a title; it’s a journey.
The rewards? They’re worth every effort. When we stand out as experts, we earn trust and respect in our fields, and that feels amazing!
Now, I want to encourage you to put these lessons into action. I believe we all have unique voices and ideas to share with the world.
